During their participation in the First Saudi Theater Festival, which is currently being held at King Khalid University, the students of Jeddah University presented a comedy play, "Don Quixote on Snape Shot," inspired from the "Polyakov" script and directed by Sobhy Yousef.

The Director tackled the text in a new way that embodies the mythical wars of "Don Quixote on Snape Shot." Through Don Quixote, the Director fights windmills in a fantasy comedy preserving the human value of a frustrated hero and touching the reality of the present community in a legendary comical method.

After the show, a symposium was moderated by Dr. Mohamed Al-Mubarak, the Director of the Festival, with the participation of the Director of the Play, Subhi Yusuf, and the Theatrical Director, Ali Al-Ghuwainem.

Al-Ghuwainem expressed his admiration for the work. He praised the quality of the script and its suitability to university theater. He commented on the linguistic effectiveness evident in the title of the show. He further maintained that the events were appropriate to reality, in addition to the speed of finding the information and the interrelationship of the text with the viewer. He also indicated that the integration of theatrical space in the show and the presentation of the caricatures in a distinctive way proved to be amazing. He maintained that the illusion contributed to heart-pounding suspense which captivated the audience. However, he criticized the deployment of actors on stage, in addition to the distribution of lighting on both the actors and the stage.

During the intermission, playwright Nayef Khalaf said, "We have a shortage in theatrical scripts, but the director managed to overcome this issue in the script of the show by activating the story of the legend, offering it an in a manner that was appropriate to the virtual reality that we live today.”

For his part, Actor and Theater Director, Sami Zahrani, praised the availability of realism, idealism, and virtualism in the script of the play by embodying the character of the legend "Don Quixote" in the relevant current affairs and issues within our society.

In the same context, the Former Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jazan, Dr. Mohammed Habibi, related that the use of the postmodern text, the activation of old characters with modern roles, is a tall task for directors and actors to complete. However, in the text of "Don Quixote on Snape Shot" play, postmodernism was activated perfectly, which reflected the strength of the beginning of the University of Jeddah in the field of theater. He added, "I’m so happy with the existence of both Taiba and Jeddah Universities in this festival, although they are relative newcomers in the field of theater."

Despite the relative modernity of the University of Jeddah in the field of theater, the Director of "Don Quixote on Snape Shot," Sobhi Youssef, thanked his students for the show, hoping that this is only the beginning to more theatrical performances. He said, "We took into account all observations that resulted from the Applied Symposium." Youssef further thanked King Khalid University for hosting and organizing this festival.

During the First Theater Festival of Saudi Universities, which is currently hosted by King Khalid University,  King Faisal University performed a play entitled "Al-Haqibah." It was written by Omar Al-Badran and directed by Maaz Al-Khamis. After the show, a workshop was held which was attended by Artist, Rashid Al-Warthan, and Director, Maaz Al-Khamis. The workshop was moderated by Hussein Al-Zaidani.

He said the director benefited from all the elements of the play, with notably beautiful variety in decor, and perfectly controlled movement of actors on stage. As for the script, Al-Warthan said, “The script stems from scientific research that has been translated into a theatrical text and oriented towards students." He concluded by noting, "The return to the first square that emerged at the end of the performance negatively impacted the performance.  Generally, we watched a very competitive performance, and I congratulate King Faisal University on this very creative performance ."

In turn, Maaz Al-Khamis, the Director of the Performance, asserted that the script was written specifically for the university, and was revised until it reached the natural pinnacle of a philosophical text that discusses the concept of success.

He added, “Much work was needed to improve the color palette theme, and criticism should be accepted with all grace." Theatrical Actor and Director, Sami Al-Zahrani, said that the play was an important experiment, noting the distinguishing factor of the show was that "The script was classic, and the directing was epic."

In a comment,  Theater Director, Dr. Naif Khalaf, confirmed that the show revealed creative talents. He said, "The stage was full of theatrical elements, but, in my opinion, the script encountered avoidable pitfalls due to linguistic errors committed by the actors. However, this point didn’t diminish their creativity."

The Vice-President of the Deanship of Student Affairs at the University of Taif, Dr. Mansour Al-Harthy, criticized what he called "audience confusion" as a result of random photography. He praised the staff. Ahmed Sarawi concluded the theatrical interventions. He expressed his admiration for the team.

It is noteworthy that the idea and supervision of the play originated from Khalid Al-Khamis, and actors Shehab El-Shehab, Daghash Aldghash, Sulayman Abdul Azim, Abdullatif Al-Muhaini, and Abdullah Dahwan. To conclude, Rashid Al-Dosari controlled the theater, with decoration by Ismail Al-Khamis, and sound effects by Mohamed Al-Nawa.

In the First Theater Festival of Saudi Universities

The activities of the First Theater Festival of Saudi Universities hosted by King Khalid University in Abha launched yesterday afternoon. The first event was a symposium entitled "University Theater: Concerns and Aspirations," moderated by the Director of the Association of Culture and Arts in Abha, Ahmad Al-Sarawi, with the participation of faculty members from Qasim University, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tami, from King Saud University, Dr. Nayef Khalaf, from Jazan University, Dr. Mohammed Habibi, and Theater Director, Abdullah Bahatab.

Al-Tami began by elaborating on the visionary leadership in University Theater provided by King Saud University in Qasim (which later turned to Qasim University). He pointed out that the idea of the first local theater festival started from the Qasim branch. The first steps taken by the Student Affairs Deanship in Qasim University was to attract qualified theatre directors and gifted students. It then moved on to look for proper theatrical scripts for well-known playwrights. Moreover, Qasim University encouraged both students and stakeholders alike to engage in playwriting. Mr. Al-Tami explained that the idea was prepared and developed by nine theater groups from the Culture and Arts Associations in several regions in the Kingdom, and subsequently, turned into a national festival under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Information.

Dr. Naif Khalaf spoke about his experience at King Saud University since he was a student. He said, "I passed through three stages: fear of trying, love of theater, and the abandonment stage. Each stage had its circumstances”. He added, “I was encouraged by the existence of a constellation of acclaimed Arab playwrights who were working in the university. Also, the university boasts a huge library, which contains important literary-theatrical references.” After that, Mr. Al-Tami reviewed his experience in directing, indicating that the most important way is to work closely with students and discovering the hidden strengths of their talents.

Dr. Mohammed Habibi started his segment by commenting on the conditions of theater in Jazan since the establishment of Jazan University. He related that the theater movement was stuck in the early stages of planning when the Deanship of Student Affairs in Jazan University started its mission to train students on the foundations of theater, giving them ample opportunities to participate in numerous activities around the Kingdom. Dr. Habibi fondly recalled an experience he described as very important; the establishment of a theater group of disabled students who participated in the theater festival that was held in Poland where they performed phenomenally.
Habibi concluded his participation in the symposium emphasizing, "Nothing brings more honor and pleasure to an innovative student and his teacher except when they raise the flag of their country in foreign festivals."

For his part, Theatrical Director Abdullah Bahatab talked about his experience for more than 20 years in the Theater of King Abdulaziz University. He summarized his experiences over several points. He mentioned the intricate details of the close cooperation that occurred with a number of playwrights. He said they collaborated with him in over 37 performances submitted by the University. What's more, the cooperation extended to 22 directors who belonged to different schools in theatrical directing. Dr. Bahatab added that King Abdulaziz University was the first to participate in a tourism festival that was held in Abha in 1408. He concluded by stressing that the university has performed more than 90 plays.

At the end of the symposium, the moderator opened the area for suggestions. They agreed to the following:

  • The importance of holding the festival on a permanent rotational basis.
  • Forming a follow-up committee representing all universities.
  • Demanding a clear strategy for theatrical activity at the level of Saudi universities rather than depending on persons who may leave their positions affecting theatrical work.
